The Kurdistan Regional Government decides to punish anyone who practices witchcraft and sorcery

Shafaq News/ The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in the Kurdistan Region stressed on Friday that anyone who practices witchcraft and sorcery will be referred to the law and the consequences of that forbidden act will be punished according to heavenly laws.
The ministry said in a statement: “Under the directive issued on 11/21/2023 and later published on 12/14/2023 in the Kurdistan Fact Sheet, the phenomenon of magic, sorcery, and the like, which conflict with religious principles, will be prohibited in any form.”
According to the statement, “All places where acts of magic and sorcery are practiced will be closed, and violators will receive strict legal penalties,” noting that “these instructions will be implemented as of today.”
At the beginning of this December, the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in the region issued strict instructions against the practice of witchcraft, sorcery, and everything that contradicts religious foundations, the impersonation of false titles, and the exploitation of religious books to achieve material gains.
Instructions issued by the Ministry under No. (1) of 2023 and appended with the signature of Minister Pashtiawan Sadiq Abdullah, viewed by Shafaq News Agency, included five articles that confirmed that carrying out actions such as using fraud and bearing false and incorrect titles such as the terms (Sheikh, Mullah, Pastor, Preacher, Religious Doctor Or something similar) using sacred religious books for the purpose of making money and exploiting them, which are prohibited actions and lead to carrying out acts of witchcraft and sorcery.
The instructions stressed that the employees of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs must work to prevent these aforementioned actions, especially carrying them out within the institutions affiliated with the Ministry, warning against taking administrative and punitive measures against any person who carries out these actions within the institutions.
The instructions obligated all institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Endowments to adhere to these instructions, file lawsuits, and take appropriate legal measures in the event that these actions occur. Otherwise, they will bear responsibility.
The instructions indicated that they would be implemented after they are published in the Official Gazette, Kurdistan Gazette.
In 2017, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced a decision to close witchcraft and sorcery offices spread across Baghdad and the governorates of southern Iraq, and to punish violators.
The Kurdistan Region prohibits the practice of witchcraft and sorcery, and the security authorities have recently arrested a number of people performing these acts and receiving money in return.
