On Monday, the Director General of the Tax Authority, Ali Waad Allawi, revealed government interest in the recommendations issued by the tax reform conference, stressing that they will bring about a qualitative change in the tax sector in Iraq.
Allawi said, “The Prime Minister is closely following the recommendations of the tax reform conference held by the Tax Authority, with the Scientific Committee.”
He explained, "The recommendations for the conference have been completed, and these recommendations will bring about a qualitative change in the work of the General Tax Authority, especially with regard to citizens with limited income, as well as transport wheels and mechanisms, the problem of similarity of names, and determining the tax rates for real estate and land will be known to all citizens and taxpayers as well." Facilitating tax procedures for citizens and company owners.
The recommendations of the tax reform conference included a number of important decisions regarding the consequences facing citizens and business owners in various buying, selling and ownership transfer operations regarding homes, cars or businesses, especially the problem of similarity of names as well as high tax rates, or collecting the tax more than once for the same property after Resell it within a period.
According to the recommendations, the Tax Authority seeks to stabilize property and land values to reduce human interference and reduce opportunities for corruption, and to encourage local companies to pay their due taxes in exchange for amortizing fines and interest, as well as solving the problem of similarity of names.
The Iraqi government is seeking to reform the tax file and reduce its obstacles for several reasons, including raising non-oil revenues in Iraq, as well as encouraging companies and businessmen to complete their commercial and financial dealings in a fundamental manner away from tax evasion, which has caused pressure on the dollar in the parallel market and raised its prices, in addition. To reduce the large red tape in tax departments that hinder commercial operations and the transfer of ownership between citizens.
