Sabah Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani said yesterday, Monday: We do not want to mortgage our food security for imports, and while he pointed out that the government is serious about addressing the problems of farmers, he indicated that allocations have been made for sprinkler irrigation systems.
The Prime Minister's Media Office stated, in a statement, that, "On the first day of the new year, Al-Sudani conducted a field visit to one of the fields in the city of Nahrawan, southeast of the capital, Baghdad, which relies on modern irrigation systems for irrigation."
The Prime Minister listened to "the problems and obstacles facing farmers working in the field, including their need for paved roads to reach small villages, as well as what is related to preparing seeds, providing chemical fertilizer, and reducing its leakage into black markets."
He praised "the efforts of the farmers and their implementation of the government's directives to adopt modern irrigation systems to water their crops," stressing that "these systems save 45-50 percent of the water used in traditional methods, and that they increase the productivity of the land and provide an economic return, the benefits of which spread throughout the country's economy."
He pointed out that "the availability of abundant stores of wheat will make Iraq less affected by its prices in global markets or any global crisis. This important strategic crop has been secured for citizens through Iraqi production through peasants and farmers. It is an essential process for the country's dignity and sovereignty, and can only be achieved through... Peasants' cooperation with the state.
He stressed that "there are problems facing farmers, and we are serious about addressing them, and most of the solutions we have already put on track," pointing out that "the government has allocated allocations for sprinkler irrigation systems, and we will continue with them and support them. Despite the scarcity of water, correct investment will lead to sufficient irrigation water."
He added, "In the previous season, the farmers witnessed the rapid payment of wheat dues without delay, and this is our duty towards them, as they provide Iraq with this important product," noting that "the symbiotic relationship between the farmer and the state in this way is productive."
He explained, "Wells were drilled in the governorates of Anbar, Najaf, Diwaniyah, and Samawah, and the cultivation process was successful through sprinkler irrigation," noting that "the farmer who digs a well must commit to irrigating through the systems, and not threaten the groundwater reserve through irrigation in the traditional way." He continued, "We are working to support the outputs from the agricultural process, in order to distinguish the real farmer, the producer, and the contributor to improving the agricultural process," pointing out that "the government supports locally produced wheat, as this contributes to employing labor in the Iraqi market, through the cycle of dealing and production." He added, "We do not want to mortgage our food security for imports. Rather, we depend on our peasants and farmers for production," explaining that "the instructions are clear to all checkpoints not to restrict the movement of fertilizers." He stated that "the private sector is allowed to import fertilizers from all neighboring countries, and the prices are now lower than the prices of the previous season."
