The Independent High Electoral Commission in Baghdad proposed, on Wednesday, the postponement of the Kurdistan Parliament Region elections.
The Commission proposed, in an official letter addressed to the Office of the President of the Kurdistan Region, a new date for holding the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections, to be determined in coordination with the Independent High Electoral Commission.”
The Commission’s media official, Imad Jamil, said, “The Commission cannot hold the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections as a result of the Federal Court’s postponement of its decision regarding the component seats until the 21st of this month.”
He added that “the period available to the Commission is not sufficient to take the necessary measures to hold the legislative elections in the Kurdistan Region,” stressing that “the Election Commission officially informed the presidency of the region of the impossibility of holding the elections on time,” calling on it to “set a new date in agreement with the political parties.”
The Federal Council of Ministers had previously decided to transfer an amount of (43,769,149,000) dinars within the budget of the Independent Election Commission from the provincial council elections program to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq’s parliament elections account, based on the provisions of Article (5) of the Federal General Budget Law for the year 2023, and to transfer an amount The difference amounting to (25,460,851,000) dinars from the emergency reserve allocated within the budget of the Kurdistan Region, and its addition to the budget of the Independent High Electoral Commission for the year 2023 towards the account of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections.
It also decided to grant the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission the authority to conduct the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections. It was also approved that the Ministry of Finance would finance the Iraqi Kurdistan region with an amount of (5,562,149,000), only five billion five-five and sixty-two million one hundred and forty-nine thousand dinars, from the remaining amount of emergency reserve allocations to the Kurdistan region in the year 2023 to implement the recommendation of the Supreme National Water Committee to resolve Drought and flood problems in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
