The Kurdistan Region expects an upcoming visit by the Federal Election Commission delegation to finally agree on the date of the local elections in the Kurdistan Region and provide their needs and capabilities, despite the fact that no internal political agreement has been reached on a specific day yet.
A member of the Commission’s media team, Hassan Hadi Zayer, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the Commission’s delegation to the region consists of members of the Board of Commissioners and a number of specialists in the operations side, and it is hoped that a joint meeting will be held on the 16th of this month.”
Zayer added, "The meeting will be with a delegation from the Kurdistan Region Presidency to set a new date for the elections after postponing the specified date," noting that "the Commission will supervise the Kurdistan Region's elections due to the lack of legitimacy in the region's institutions."
He pointed out that "the financial costs were determined by the Ministry of Finance at the end of last year through an official letter," pointing out that "the two most important foundations for holding the elections are the election law and the financial aspect."
For his part, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiyath Surji, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the Union is ready to run in the elections at any time determined by the Federal Commission, and there is no problem in setting the date.”
Sorgi explained, "All the tools for running in the elections are ready, and there are no comments after the Federal Court's decision, which is considered final."
While the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafa Muhammad Karim, pointed out that the Commission’s visit to the region concerns technical matters and no date has been set for the elections due to the appeal against the quota file.
Karim added to Al-Sabah that the Democratic Party is insisting that the elections be held next February, but we expect them to be postponed for another period, noting that there are attempts by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan to postpone the elections even though it is inevitable that they will be held.
