    Baghdad Today - Translation
    A US Treasury official revealed today, Wednesday (January 31, 2024), that Washington holds the Iraqi economy a large part of the responsibility for the killing of three of its soldiers during the attack that targeted their military base last Monday, announcing American “expectations” of cooperation from Baghdad. 
    The official, who refused to reveal his identity, told Reuters, according to what Baghdad Today translated, that “the Iraqi economic system is now being used to help finance attacks against American forces,” stressing, “We expect the Iraqi government to cooperate in revealing information about armed groups to us.” Especially after the incident of the killing of the soldiers,” referring to economic information. 
    He continued, "We also expect Baghdad to help identify the sources of funding for armed groups linked to Iran, in addition to disrupting them to prevent the Iraqi economy from being used to finance those groups with equipment that is used to target our forces," stressing, "We are now dealing with a situation that causes the loss of American lives," as he described it. 
    Reuters also confirmed that the Iraqi government, which has “uniquely allied” relations with both Iran and the United States, has about $100 billion from its financial treasury with the United States, explaining, “The Iraqi government needs to maintain a positive relationship with Washington to prevent Washington from stopping funding for Baghdad.” in dollars for selling its oil,” referring to Washington’s ability to stop the flow of oil revenues to Iraq in US dollars.  
    The US Treasury had previously announced the imposition of additional economic sanctions on another group of Iraqi banks under the terms of "currency smuggling and violating US sanctions on Iran."
