    Al-Sumaria News - Special

Amid the population increase that Iraq is suffering from, recording approximately or more than a million increases annually, a historical review of the fertility rate in Iraq shows that it has in fact been declining over the past 55 years and continuously.

The fertility rate, or women's fertility, means the number or rate of children that each Iraqi woman gives birth to throughout her life.

According to a special review conducted by Al-Sumaria News of fertility rate data in Iraq and the world, Iraq is currently ranked 47th globally and fourth in the Arab world after Sudan, Somalia and Palestine, with a fertility rate of 3.17 children per woman.

This rank and percentage was lower than Iraq’s rank in 2021, when it was ranked 43rd globally, with a female fertility rate of 3.5 children per woman.

This decline is not a coincidence, but rather the result of 55 years of continuous decline, as Iraqi women began to have fewer children than they had in previous years.
While the fertility rate in 1950 was 6.2 children per Iraqi woman, it rose and decreased annually until 1969, when it recorded its highest level ever, with a fertility rate of 7.1 children per woman. Since then, the fertility rate has been declining continuously.

By 2023, the fertility rate for Iraqi women was 3.17 compared to 1969, which amounted to 7.1 children per woman, which means that it had decreased by 56% over the past 55 years.

However, Iraq is still considered to be in advanced ranks, as it is ranked fourth in the Arab world after Sudan, Somalia, and Palestine, and 47th globally out of 200 countries, and it needs to reduce the fertility rate more, especially amid the environmental consequences it faces, water and wealth shortages, lack of job opportunities, housing crises, and energy shortages. , all due to the large population expansion.
