    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday (March 20, 2024), political science professor Maher Al-Abbasi outlined the reasons for the Sudanese not launching the “war on the deep state” directly, while pointing to an alternative plan that the Sudanese is targeting to attack corruption without reaching the stage of direct confrontation with the blocs that sponsor this corruption.
Al-Abbasi said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Al-Sudani's arrival to the top of the pyramid of power in Iraq was through political consensuses that included bloc leaders, so it is difficult for him to enter into a direct collision with them in exposing large and dangerous corruption files affecting some of these blocs."
However, despite this, Al-Abbasi believes that “Al-Sudani’s steps in this direction have begun to exert pressure on revealing some threads of important files, but they remain within certain limits, but he has other important steps in the areas of reconstruction, services, and resolving problems.”
He added, "Al-Sudani's battle with corruption represented by the deep state in Iraq is postponed for the time being because he needs to remove himself from the political situation with all its limitations and move towards independence while strengthening the state's capabilities through its institutions, including oversight, and creating a popular public opinion that will serve as his support in the fight against... Corruption, which is considered the most dangerous of all its challenges, because some files will affect blocs and leaders, and therefore the situation will be somewhat sensitive.”
He considered that "directing the compass of the government's efforts towards reconstruction and construction is a correct option in order to create hope after years of popular frustration, and therefore there can be pre-emptive strikes on corruption that will not be feared to be followed by any internal repercussions. This is the most important option in order to avoid any crises."
