    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (May 14, 2024), Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani renewed Iraq’s support for UNRWA to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians.
The Prime Minister's media office stated in a statement, received by "Baghdad Today", that the latter "received, today, Tuesday, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, and his accompanying delegation."
He added, "During the meeting, the agency's efforts were reviewed in providing relief to Palestinians suffering under the brutal bombing of the occupation forces, and the continued provision of aid despite the attacks that targeted the agency's headquarters, and the martyrdom of a large number of its workers."
Al-Sudani indicated, according to the statement, that “the great efforts provided by the agency are humanitarian efforts that are valued by peoples more than governments,” stressing “the Iraqi government’s readiness to provide all support and support to the agency, and to alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian people.”
Al-Sudani praised "the courageous stances of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, regarding the sinful aggression taking place against the Palestinian people," expressing his "condolences to those who fell victim to the aggressive bombing of the agency's relief workers."
Al-Sudani stressed that “targeting UNRWA headquarters in Gaza is part of the war of extermination committed against the Palestinians,” pointing out that “the world today is facing a new humanitarian catastrophe in Rafah, due to the occupation’s intransigence and its insistence on killing more civilians.”
Al-Sudani reiterated his "emphasis on Iraq's firm and principled position towards the Palestinian right," indicating that "the suffering of the Palestinians will double with the targeting of Rafah, as they no longer have a safe place to seek refuge."
For his part, Lazzarini expressed his "appreciation for the government's decision to continue providing assistance to UNRWA," praising "the role of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society and the political and financial support."
Lazzarini reviewed "the attacks on UNRWA and the targeting of its headquarters, and the fact that many of its employees in Palestine face arrest and torture by the occupation authorities, with the aim of cutting off this important outlet for humanitarian assistance."
