Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani considered today, Thursday, that the scourge of corruption is no different from terrorism, as the latter no longer poses a threat to the Iraqi state unlike the former, but he stressed that fighting this scourge is not impossible.
This came in a speech he delivered during the first meeting of governorate councils and offices, with the Integrity Commission and the Supreme Commission for Coordination between Governorates, held under the slogan (Integration of oversight roles is a basic pillar of performance evaluation for better services and sustainable development).
The forum aims to activate the supervisory role of the governorate councils in line with the government’s priorities and the tasks of the Integrity Commission in fighting corruption. It also aims to coordinate between the Supreme Authority for Coordination between Governorates and the Integrity Commission, in order to activate the supervisory roles of local governments.
Al-Sudani said in his speech, “We stress the importance of supporting the supervisory, legislative, and policy-making roles of the governorate councils, to ensure an environment that limits corruption.”
He added, "The scourge of corruption is no different from terrorism in that it must be fought, and terrorism no longer represents a threat to the state, while corruption constitutes a rift in the credibility of the work of state agencies."
Al-Sudani also pointed out that, “Fighting corruption is not impossible, by adopting practical steps based on the law, successful tools and experience in decision-making, as “disrupting business is a form of corruption and wasting money.”
The Prime Minister noted that “there are many stalled projects.” Under the pretext of auditing,” stressing
that “councils must be supported within the framework of implementing the national strategy for integrity and anti-corruption, as well as proactive work against corruption.”
