Shafaq News/ The Minister of Transport and Communications in the Kurdistan Region, Ano Johar Abduka, said on Thursday that the development road project will pass through the region and from there to Turkey and Europe.
This came in a joint press conference held with the Director General of Iraqi Railways, Younis Al-Kaabi. A meeting was held between a delegation from the Kurdistan Ministry of Transport and another from the Iraqi Ministry of Transport with an Italian consulting company today in Erbil to discuss the course of the development road.
Abduka said during the conference that the delegation of the Iraqi Ministry of Transport had agreed to the proposal of the Ministry and the regional government for the development road project to pass through Kurdistan.
He added that this project, by passing through the Kurdistan Region, will shorten 32 kilometers of the road, in addition to being less expensive and safer.
For his part, Younis Al-Kaabi said during the same press conference that the project “starts from Al-Faw port in Basra and extends to Nineveh Governorate with a length of 1,200 kilometers, then from northern Nineveh, passing through the Kurdistan Region and then to the Iraqi-Turkish border,” adding that “there are only steps left.” few to implement the project.
He stressed the endeavor to connect the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk Governorate with railways in the country.
It is worth noting that the "Development Road" project is a land and railway road extending from Iraq to Turkey and its ports. The length of the road and railway is 1,200 kilometers inside Iraq, and aims primarily to transport goods between Europe and the Gulf countries.
The project's investment budget amounts to about 17 billion US dollars, including 6.5 billion for the highway, and 10.5 billion for the electric train, and it will be completed in 3 phases, the first ending in 2028, the second in 2033, and the third in 2050.
The project is expected to provide about 100,000 job opportunities in the first phase, and one million job opportunities after its completion.
