Al-Sumaria News - Local

The Ministry of Health reported numbers that may seem repetitive and were previously announced on more than one occasion regarding cigarettes, the amount of spending on them, the percentage of smokers, and the volume of deaths due to them annually, while Al-Sumaria News conducted an approach to what these numbers reported by the Ministry mean to understand them further.

Assistant Director of the Tobacco Control Program at the Ministry of Health, Waseem Kilan, said, “20 percent of Iraqis who are 18 years or older smoke tobacco of all kinds, while 40-50 percent of Iraqis suffer from passive smoking due to their indirect exposure to tobacco smoke.”

While he explained that the majority of smokers are men, he pointed out that “spending on smoking amounts to 6 billion dinars per day, while we have diagnosed the presence of toxic and other narcotic substances in regular and electronic cigarettes and honeydews, as electronic cigarettes contain 127 toxic substances, including lead.

He explained that “We expect a death to be recorded every 10 minutes due to smoking in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and early smoking affects brain development, as there are electronic cigarettes in the form of (vaping devices) today in schools,”

he pointed out, “There are difficulties in implementing the tobacco control law, but there are.” Two new draft laws in Parliament to protect against the harms of tobacco, with clear mechanisms for implementation.”

Based on the numbers, spending 6 billion dinars daily on buying and burning cigarettes in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] means more than 2.1 trillion dinars annually, an amount that exceeds the Ministry of Agriculture’s budget of 1.9 million dinars. Trillion annually, and it is more than 10 times the budget of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which amounts to less than 200 billion dinars.

As for death, the death of a person every 10 minutes because of cigarettes means that more than 50,000 Iraqis die annually because of cigarettes, while the number of deaths is 100,000. Nearly 240,000 people die in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] annually for various reasons, which means that 20% of annual deaths in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] are caused by cigarettes.
