{Local: Al-Furat News} The Ministry of Agriculture announced that it is following up on afforestation campaigns in the country.
Ministry spokesman Muhammad Al-Khuzaie told Al-Furat News Agency, "The reason that many government projects lack afforestation is due to the narrow spaces and because such projects need large areas."
He added, "We expect that the afforestation campaigns have met many of the requirements in this regard, and after the success of planting five million trees, there will be other campaigns. Planting the desert on more than 4 million dunums has contributed to reducing desertification, increasing green spaces, and reducing the effects of climate change."
Al-Khuzaie confirmed that "the Ministry is continuing to follow up on these matters."
It is noteworthy that on World Environment Day, the head of the National State Forces Alliance, Mr. Ammar al-Hakim, called for launching a massive afforestation campaign (popularly and governmentally).
He urged support for the efforts of the Ministry of Environment in confronting the challenges of desertification, pollution, and lack of environmental culture, and to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign to introduce the environment, how to preserve it, and the importance of benefiting from any effort in this direction.
Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim also called for increased attention to the climate change file, which is part of the government program, and the adoption of investment projects to address negative environmental impacts, intensifying the efforts of the external negotiating committee with the countries upstream of the Iraqi rivers, and building a negotiating team capable of restoring Iraq’s rights to water resources based on International laws and norms.
