    Economy News _ Baghdad
The Ministry of Agriculture has prepared a strategic plan that includes four projects aimed at increasing green spaces in the country, as part of efforts to reduce the spread of desertification and combat dust storms that have recently increased in intensity.
Iraq loses 100,000 dunums annually due to the problem of desertification and desert encroachment, the most dangerous of which is the escalation of sand dunes in areas that have long been fertile and promising for agriculture and securing food security outcomes for the country.
The Director General of the Department of Forestry and Desertification Control in the Ministry, Dr. Bassam Kanaan Abdel-Jabbar, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” followed by “Al-Iqtisad News” that his department has four projects to increase green spaces in the country. The first is to multiply and improve Eucalyptus trees within the Forestry Department, which is under implementation. Currently, it is part of 11 stations affiliated with the department. The second is the cultivation of fodder crops during the upcoming winter season, while the third specializes in multiplying seeds of paulownia and olive trees within Kirkuk Governorate.
He added that the fourth project is concerned with the multiplication of seeds of medicinal and aromatic plants and is considered one of the pioneering programs that contribute to the development of the agricultural sector and the enhancement of economic resources due to its high economic and environmental feasibility, as it is used in the manufacture of cosmetics, which he revealed is currently being cultivated within the Khan Atshan pasture station in the Holy Governorate of Karbala. In addition to the stations in Salah al-Din and Anbar governorates, which are currently preparing an action plan for the upcoming fall season, aiming to combat desertification.
Regarding the most important challenges facing projects to increase green spaces in the country, Abdul-Jabbar explained that the most important of them is the scarcity of water due to the lack of imports from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which called on his department to develop a strategic plan to address the provision of water necessary for agriculture through drilling wells, and rehabilitating existing ones to contribute to increasing Cultivated areas in the desert, pointing to the importance played by the department’s pasture stations in the desert regions, as they contribute to protecting the environment from climate change, by keeping pace with modern technology, and using environmentally friendly mechanisms while adopting clean energy in the work of the stations, in addition to adopting modern irrigation technologies to rationalize Water Consumption.
