Big Blueprint To Beating Dallas? Giants Hand Cowboys 2nd Loss of Season
The Dallas Cowboys entered week 14’s Sunday Night Football matchup with the New York Giants in snowy Met Life Stadium holding a chance to not only clinch the NFC East division crown but also secure a first round bye in the playoffs. For just the second time this season, the Cowboys began the game on defense as the Giants won the opening coin toss and elected to receive.
The Giants began the game on their own 26 yard line and immediately went into the no huddle offense. A holding penalty on right tackle Bobby Hart slowed things down however, and set New York back with a 3rd and 15. An incomplete pass followed and the Dallas defense was able to get off the field quickly. A good Giant punt pinned the Cowboys inside their own 20 where Dak Prescott and company would go to work for the first time.
The Giant defense picked up right where they left off in the week one matchup as they stuffed Ezekiel Elliott on the first play of the game in route to a very quick three and out for the Dallas offense. Eli Manning and the offense would begin with similar filed position as the first drive when a Chris Jones punt was fair caught at New York 30 yard line.
The Cowboy defense continued their hot start to the game as a Tyrone Crawford sack of Manning on 3rd down forced the Giants into a three and out of their own. Dallas took over just across their own 30 yard line for their second possession looking to get something going.
New York continued to make that difficult however as they blitzed Prescott on first down forcing an incompletion on their way to forcing another three and out. However Jason Garrett decided to go for it on 4th and 1 and Ezekiel Elliott and the offensive line were able to convert extending the drive. Dallas took advantage following a couple of Zeke runs, Prescott found a wide open Terrance Williams on a play action pass deep across the middle for the touchdown and 7-0 lead.
The Giants began their third possession of the game looking to respond to the Cowboy touchdown. The drive got off to a fast start as two plays had them into Dallas territory with a long completion to Odell Beckham Jr being the catalyst. Beckham then proceeded to drop a deep touchdown pass after beating Brandon Carr down the sideline. He made up for it on the next play though converting a 4th and 3 with a catch versus the aforementioned Carr. With New York moving themselves deeper into scoring range, Manning just flat out dropped the ball while dropping back to pass resulting in a fumble and Dallas recovery to close out the first quarter.
The Cowboys began the second quarter by giving the Giants the ball right back as Prescott threw just his third interception of the year. Janoris Jenkins was able to cut in front of the slipping Dez Bryant to secure the pick. The Giant offense took over and the Cowboys continued to shoot themselves in the foot when Anthony Hitchens committed a roughing the passer penalty moving the ball across midfield on the first play. The Dallas defense was able to stand though, forcing a New York punt. The punt was a beauty as it pinned the Cowboys inside of their own five yard line to start the next drive.
Dallas took over looking to pick up a few first downs at least in order to flip field position. The initial play produced a Zeke 13 yard run, but a sack of Prescott followed and a botched screen pass on 3rd and long resulted in a Dallas punt. A decent Odell Beckham Jr. return set the New York offense up again with good field position, this time at midfield. The Giant drive didn’t last long though, Benson Mayowa came flying around the edge to sack Manning forcing another fumble in the process. Sean Lee was able to recover the fumble setting the Dallas offense up just barely into Giant territory.
The Cowboys used a few Elliott runs to move themselves on the brink of field goal range. But the Giant defense continued their assault on Prescott, sacking him on 3rd and long and forcing Dallas out of field goal range. A Jones punt left the Giants starting at their own 10 yard line when Eli next took the field. The Dallas defense continued their stellar first half forcing another three and out. Cole Beasley appeared to have set the Cowboys up in fantastic field position deep into Giant territory but a holding penalty on Byron Jones wiped that out, leaving Dallas to start the drive in its own territory.
The Cowboys again turned to their workhorse back to begin the next drive as Zeke took them across mid-field when the two minute warning hit. The Giant defense flexed it muscles when after a 2nd down incompletion, Lance Dunbar got crushed a yard shy of the first down on a third down reception, resulting in another Chris Jones punt that was fair caught at the 15 yard line with a 1:30 left in the half. The Dallas defense kept matching its Giant counter part throughout the first half as another three and out gave the Cowboy offense the ball back with two timeouts and 32 seconds but backed up deep in their own territory. Prescott was able to maneuver the offense into position for a 55 yard Dan Bailey field goal attempt but the kick clanked off the cross bar and Dallas had to settle for a 7-0 halftime lead.
The Cowboys began the second half on their own 25 yard line after a touchback. The New York defense picked up right where they left off, continuing to blitz the young Prescott again forcing a 3 and out. A Chris Jones punt coupled with a Giant block in the back penalty set the Giants up near their own 20 yard line for their first possession of the half.
Barry Church dropped an easy interception on the first play of the drive as Eli Manning never saw him, but Church was unable to maintain control of the ball as he tumbled out of bounds. The turnover would have given the Cowboys the ball in the red zone, however, a Giant punt paired with yet another Cowboy special teams penalty set the Dallas offense up deep in their own territory instead. The Cowboy offense continued to struggle though, failing again to even pick up a first down. A Jones punt set the Giants up just shy of mid-field.
The New York offense began to peck away at the Dallas defense on the next drive. Converting a couple 3rd and short situations and even a big 4th and 3 completion to move the ball just outside of the red zone. An Odell Beckham Jr. drop on 3rd and 9 halted the drive and a Robbie Gould field goal cut the Dallas lead to 7-3.
Dallas took over on their own 23-yard line desperate for anything resembling the offense we saw the first 12 games the season. Back to back long gains by Beasley and Elliott brought the ball just across mid-field. However, Dallas continued to get in its own way when a Terrance Williams holding penalty not only wiped out another Beasley first down but set the offense up in a 3rd and 15. Prescott compounded the mistake ridden play with an interception on a wild throw into double coverage. Leon Hall brought the turnover all the way back out to the Giant 40 yard line as Eli and company looked to take their first lead of the night.
They didn’t have to look very far as the second play of the drive went for a 62-yard touchdown to Odell Beckham Jr as he beat Brandon Carr across the middle of the field before outrunning the rest of the Dallas defense for a 10-7 lead.
Lance Dunbar didn’t do the offense any favors as a poor return again set them up inside their own 20 as the 3rd quarter drew to a close. Another 3 and out awaited the Dallas offense as the 4th quarter began with Prescott throwing behind an open Bryant on 3rd down. Manning and the Giants took over trying to cement the game away with another touchdown.
After a holding penalty set them up with a 1st and 20, the Giants picked up 17 yards on first down and continued their march into Dallas territory. Just when it looked like the flood gates were about to open and the Giants would go in for another score, Anthony Brown stepped in front of Victor Cruz for an interception giving Dallas the ball back still down just a field goal.
A play action pass to Terrence Williams got the Dallas drive off to a good start and moved the ball out from the shadow of their own goal line. However the Cowboys would go no where but backwards from there on out, again having to punt. The Giant offense could not muster anything on their next drive either, punting the ball back to Dallas, pinning them inside their own 10 yard line where they have seemed to be all night.
At this point of the contest it felt like each Dallas 3 and out was even faster than the one previous. This time they punted back to the Giants giving them possession on their own 30 yard line, when even a New York field goal felt like it would seal the game away. In a game that featured offensive ineptitude for most of the night on both sides, it seemed only fitting that the Giants again went 3 and out. Dallas took over with 2:39 on the clock and one timeout at their own 24 yard line.
After converting on a 3rd and 8 with a slant completion to Bryant – his first of the game – #88 then fumbled when he was contacted by Janoris Jenkins. The Giants recovered but were unable to run out the clock. A New York punt was downed at the Dallas 3 yard line and the Cowboys, who haven’t been able to move the ball all night would have to drive the length of the field in one minute with no timeouts. Bryant was unable to come up with the catch on 4th and 10 and the New York Giants gave the Cowboys their second loss of the season.
Dallas was in position to set themselves up for an easy last three games with a victory tonight securing the division and a first round bye. However, the Giants again proved they have Dallas’ number and tighten the division race as the season comes to a close. Dallas will finish the year with primetime home games against surging Tampa Bay and Detroit teams before finishing up the year on the road against division rival Philadelphia. As great as this team has played up to this point in the season, they have won nothing yet and must right the ship these last three weeks heading into the playoffs.
