[ltr]lifts - US lifts Sudan sanctions and gets a pledge not to cooperate with North Korea 15[/ltr]
    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]The United States has announced the lifting of long-imposed economic sanctions on Sudan, citing its decision to make progress in fighting terrorism and record improvements in human rights conditions.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The Trump administration has received a pledge from Sudan that it will not seek arms deals with North Korea and that Washington will not compromise in ensuring Khartoum's commitment," one official said.[/ltr]
[ltr]But senior US officials have said Sudan will remain on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism, with Iran and Syria, a situation that imposes a ban on arms sales and restrictions on US aid.[/ltr]
[ltr]Sudanese officials will remain under United Nations sanctions linked to human rights abuses during the conflict in Darfur, officials told reporters after they asked not to be named.[/ltr]
[ltr]It should be noted that the armed conflict in Darfur has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and has accused Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of committing genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Court of Justice.[/ltr]
[ltr]US officials said the lifting of the sanctions reflected a US assessment that Sudan had made progress in meeting Washington's demands, including cooperation in combating terrorism, working to resolve internal conflicts and allowing more humanitarian access to Darfur and other border areas where insurgents are active.[/ltr]
[ltr]Heather Naort, a spokeswoman for the US State Department, said the lifting of the sanctions was a recognition of "Sudan's continuing positive actions", stressing that Khartoum should achieve further improvement.[/ltr]
[ltr]The decision comes as a continuation of a process initiated by former President Barack Obama at the end of his term, and opposed by human rights groups.[/ltr]
[ltr]For his part, Sudan officially welcomed the decision of US President Donald Trump, lifting the economic sanctions imposed on him.A Sudanese Foreign Ministry statement described the decision as positive and considered it an important development in the history of Sudan-US relations.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The Sudan is looking forward to building normal relations with the United States of America, which can be developed, but this calls for removing Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism because it does not apply to it and to cancel the negative measures taken by American institutions against Sudan or support at the international level."[/ltr]
[ltr]"The lifting of these sanctions permanently sends the wrong message, especially with Sudan making very little progress in the field of human rights," said Andrea Brasso, deputy director of the Washington office of Human Rights Watch.[/ltr]
[ltr]The United States imposed sanctions in 1997, including a trade ban and the withholding of government assets for human rights abuses and terrorism concerns. Washington imposed further sanctions in 2006 for alleged complicity in violence in the Darfur region.[/ltr]
