US Defense Secretary James Matisse on Friday ruled out air strikes against Iran, saying it was "out of the question."
"Washington does not adopt a policy of regime change in Iran or the attempt to overthrow it," Matisse said in a statement. "America aims to change Iran's behavior, including its threats in the region."

US Defense Secretary James Matisse on Friday denied the authenticity of the Australian media report, which spoke of Washington's preparations for strikes on Iran's nuclear targets next month.

In a statement to reporters at the Pentagon, Matisse described the report, published by ABC News, quoting senior Australian officials who declined to be identified, as "pure fiction".

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stressed that the report is only allegations, saying there is no basis for the report that Trump is preparing for a military confrontation with Iran.

The ABC report quoted a senior Australian security source as saying Australian secret military sites could be used to help Americans gather intelligence and set targets in the next US military campaign.

The Australian report and the US response come at a time when tensions between Tehran and Washington have risen markedly.
