US President George W. Bush's advisers hope to invite Gulf leaders to attend a summit in Washington this fall, despite the insistence of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates not to give up their demands.
Senior figures in the four-nation Gulf Alliance of Qatar are concerned about the summit agenda that Trump is calling for, but privately say they are ready to attend in principle. According to The Guardian, the Qataris believe there can be no progress in the Gulf conflict without US intervention. A year-long collapse in Gulf unity is hurting American interests.
The United States' reliance on a reckless Saudi foreign policy could lead to chaos with Iran and energy markets, paralysis in Yemen, and protracted agency conflicts in the Horn of Africa and Libya. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged all parties to end the row.
Are stuck collectively in a seemingly ugly and sometimes trivial dispute
According to The Guardian, leaders of the Gulf states secretly admit that they are stuck collectively in a seemingly ugly and sometimes trivial dispute, and thus harm the image of all Arab countries in the eyes of the West. Much of the propaganda, such as the hire of demonstrators, is designed for local Arab media. But they insist that the core issues at stake are so important that they can not be abandoned, and that the independent ruling family in Qatar is the one to blame.
Four Gulf states - the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt - struck Qatar in June 2017, expecting the oil-rich emirate to bow to economic pressure in months. But more than a year later, after millions of both parties spent on lobbyists, public relations firms and contracts, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) was almost dead and Saudi Arabia was debating whether to dig a waterway on its border with Qatar, effectively turning the peninsula into an island.
Gargash said in a speech to the right-wing British Policy Research Center that if the dispute could not be resolved, the goal should be "not to see Qatar as a crisis anymore, but as a new situation." He argued that there are three forces in the Middle East competing with each other: Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Gulf States, which are continuing to be open and open with a growing voice towards women's equality, represented by the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Qatar, far from being aligned with its natural allies in the Gulf, supports extremism and Iran. He also claimed that Qatar funds Iranian-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen. But Qatari officials this week, during the visit of the emir of the country, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, to London, presented their country as a trustworthy ally of the West, referring to the reckless foreign policy decisions of the Saudis, especially in the civil war in Yemen.
The development of relations between Qatar and America
They said Qatar and the United States "laid the foundation stone for the expansion" of the main US airbase in the region in Al-Azid, 35 km southwest of Doha. The United States has launched tens of thousands of air missions against the al-Qaeda terrorist, which hosts 10,000 US armed forces.
This does not indicate that Qatar is hostile to the United States, officials said. The most worrying thing for the United States is the possibility that Iran and Qatar will find themselves pushed toward each other in embracing a diplomat born of shared isolation if the Gulf row continues. This would be a high price paid by the United States for leaving the dispute growing worse.
Unlike other Gulf states, Qatar has sided with Europe, not the United States, to say that Iran has complied with the Comprehensive Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (CPA) - signed in 2015. It sees US policy as likely to lead to chaos instead of changing the regime favored by the West. It is noticeable this week that Qatar was prepared to warn Britain that Iran might close the Straits of Hormuz if the United States pressed sanctions very severely.
In the battle to win favor at Trump, the Saudi-UAE support for his position on Iran may be crucial. But Gargash admits he is worried about the differences between Europe and the United States over Iran. Some Gulf leaders secretly want to see Trump dilute his anti-European speech on trade, in order to include Europe in the US plan to isolate Iran.
