BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Operations at the port of Umm Qasr, south of Basra, bordering the Gulf and local officials, said operations at the port contracted by nearly 80 percent on Tuesday after protesters closed the port entrance.
A port manager said operations at the port had been reduced to 20 percent due to the inability of substitute workers to join work.
Thousands of Iraqis took to the streets this week in a second wave of protests against the government and the political elite, which they say are corrupt and isolated from the people.
The death toll has risen to at least 250 since the outbreak of wider unrest on October 1.
Umm Qasr port receives Iraq's imports of wheat, vegetables, oils, sugar and various commodities.
Local officials say they have held talks with protesters to try to persuade them to allow workers to enter the port so that it can operate normally.
