Baghdad: The mainstay of the emirate
. Specialists in economic affairs praised the government directives announced by the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, regarding providing all the requirements for achieving food security, and not conditioning that matter on imports from abroad, stressing the necessity of investing all available opportunities for food production in accordance with the principle of comparative advantage. And working to export the surplus, indicating that reaching that goal requires implementing a package of measures, most notably supporting farmers and using modern mechanization of irrigation, in addition to controlling ports and preventing the import of products that can be provided locally.
Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, began the new year with a field visit to one of the fields in the city of Nahrawan, which relies on modern irrigation systems for irrigation. He listened to “the problems and obstacles facing the farmers working in the field.” Al-

He continued, “We are working to support the outputs from the agricultural process, from In order to distinguish the real farmer, the producer, and the contributor to improving the agricultural process,” he pointed out that “the government supports locally produced wheat, as it contributes to employing labor in the Iraqi market, through the cycle of dealing and production.”
He added, "We do not want to mortgage our food security on imports. Rather, we depend on our peasants and farmers for production," explaining that "the directives are clear to all checkpoints not to restrict the movement of fertilizers."
Economist Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi said during his talk to “Al-Sabah” that “food security requires investing in all available opportunities to produce food in accordance with the principle of comparative advantage and exporting the surplus to import a food basket that does not have the capabilities to produce,” indicating that “achieving food security must be characterized by the ability to produce Storing food and importing sufficient quantities of it to meet the basic needs of the entire population, and achieving the greatest degree of independence to reduce the sensitivity of the food system to fluctuations in global markets.”
Dr. Al-Rawi continued, in order for us to be confident in the food system, the minimum nutritional needs must be achieved in the event of seasonal or periodic differences in local or global production, and the food system must be sustainable and achieve equality for all, pointing out that the sustainability of the food system requires developing strategies to support food production. Food, stressing that the development of agriculture works to reduce the phenomenon of unemployment and helps enhance the efficiency of the national economy.
The spokesman also stressed the need to "exploit comparative advantages to produce some crops, such as vegetables, fruits, and dates, and export the surplus of them with the aim of enhancing the trade balance."
For her part, a member of the administrative body of the Iraqi Economists Association, Dr. Ikram Abdel Aziz, explained that the current conditions in the country require developing a strategy to advance the economic sector in general and the agricultural sector in particular, through reorganizing this sector, which is closely linked to the water element and using modern methods in Agricultural production through advanced irrigation systems, improved seeds, efficient cultivation methods, use of mechanization, and agricultural pest control.
Abdel Aziz stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to continue supporting farmers by providing loans, activating the role of the private sector in this field, enhancing the financial capabilities of the Agricultural Bank, and encouraging foreign investments in the agricultural sector. In turn, the specialist in economic affairs, Dr. Abdul Latif Shehab, stated that water security is closely linked to food security and its sustainability, and today the country is going through a semi-water crisis due to years of drought, climate change, and misexploitation of water wealth, which has been reflected on the country’s economy and agricultural production in particular, since agriculture needs Its main element is water.
