On Monday, the Ministry of Water Resources announced 9 pilot projects that reduce water waste in Iraq and preserve natural irrigation in the areas through which the projects pass.
The ministry’s official spokesman, Khaled Shamal, said in a statement to the official agency, “Pioneer projects are concerned with reducing water waste, including the Great Samawah Water Project in Al-Muthanna Governorate, which is the transfer of piped water over a distance of 60 kilometers, in addition to the Al-Badaa Water Project, which is the transfer of Pipe water from Dhi Qar Governorate to Basra Governorate for a distance exceeding 45 kilometers.”
He continued, “There are large pilot projects such as the Alexandria and Al-Mahawil project in Babil Governorate and the Abu Zayah project in Anbar Governorate, in addition to two surface irrigation projects in Al-Muthanna Governorate, and two pioneer irrigation projects in both the Baghdad and Holy Karbala governorates, and there are concrete lining works.”
Shamal stressed, “All of these projects mentioned above work to reduce water waste and preserve water quantities for natural irrigation in the areas through which these projects pass.”
Regarding international agreements to support Iraq’s water position, he explained, “The economic, commercial, and strategic agreements and treaties at the level of the Government of Iraq with other governments support, in one way or another, several areas such as water resources, agriculture, and the economy,” adding, “The Ministry has joint committees with countries of the world.” It supports any government approach to enhance water consumption.”
He pointed out, “Iraq needs international support and pressure, and it needs common interests between countries that work to strengthen relations and support Iraq’s efforts to preserve its water rights.”
