Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will receive a phone call from United States President Donald Trump on Thursday evening as per a request from the latter, source said.
Alsumaria News quoted “an informed political source” a saying that the call will tackle political and security developments in Iraq and the Middle East, but did not mention specifics.
This would be the first phone call Trump makes with Abadi since he assumed U.S. presidency on January 20th.
Both leaders talked on phone on January 18th. In that call, Trump pledged support for Iraq and invited the Iraqi premier to visit the United States.
Trump has set the war against Islamic State militants as a top priority for his administration. Iraq is nearing towards eliminating the extremist group from its territories, with a few months predicted to clear the western side of Mosul, IS’s largest stronghold in the country, from militants.
The source did not mention whether the call would tackle a controversial travel and entry ban Trump ordered late January for U.S.-bound migrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iraq. The ban, which was recently revoked by a U.S. court but faces an appeal from the U.S. administration, had caused disorder at several world airports, and ignited protests inside the United States. Iraq had demanded the U.S. to reconsider the ban, and later welcomed the court ruling which reversed it.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is expected to talk with US President Donald Trump on Thursday evening, at a time when the two countries have demonstrated unprecedented cooperation in their joint fight against ISIS, but most Iraqis are unable to obtain US visas.

"[The leaders] will talk about bilateral relations, both countries' strategic agreement, strengthening ties and increasing military cooperation in the fight against ISIS,” the Iraqi premier's media officer, Saad Hadithi, told Rudaw.

The looming offensive to retake the western side of Mosul from ISIS militants also will be on the agenda, according to Hadithi.

Concerning the suspension of procession visa, which affected seven countries with Muslim majorities including Iraq,Hadithi explained that "within the context of developing both countries’ relations, this topic will also be discussed."

A White House press release confirmed that Trump and Abadi are scheduled to talk.

Speaking to members of the US intelligence community shortly after his inauguration, US President Donald Trump said: “To the victor belong the spoils.”

"So we should have kept the oil," Trump said. "But, OK, maybe you'll have another chance."

Abadi quickly objected.

“I have asked others too, but we don’t know yet what he means by that,” Abadi said. “Did he mean in 2003 or that ISIS should not take Iraq’s oil, or what? It is not clear to us yet.

“But Iraq’s oil is for Iraqis and any statement contradicting that is unacceptable.”

In 2008, both countries signed the ‘Strategic Framework Agreement for a Relationship of Friendship and Cooperation.’ It has guided their overall political, economic, cultural, and security policies.
