    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]Discussions continue within the corridors of   the Iraqi parliament  regarding amending the unified retirement law and returning the retirement age to 63 years instead of 60, amid legal and financial challenges that hinder the final approval of the amendment. While the House of  Representatives seeks  to submit a proposal to return the retirement age, the government stresses the necessity of its approval of it due to the existence of financial aspects that require coordination between it and  the parliament .[/rtl]

[rtl]The Deputy Chairman of the Legal Committee, Murtada Al-Saadi, explained that “the law is still in the government’s preparation phase, as it contains financial aspects that require its approval and the parliament’s vision with the return of the retirement age, but the problem remains financial.”[/rtl]

[rtl]For his part, member of the Legal Committee, Mohammed Jassim Al-Khafaji, stated that “the unified retirement law had previously adopted returning the retirement age from 60 to 63, and the Finance Committee proposed it to the Parliament Presidency for the purpose of proceeding with the first reading, but it was withdrawn by the government,” stressing that “there is a new movement at the present time to proceed with the amendment, taking into consideration the government’s objections.”[/rtl]

[rtl]The MP added, "Parliament has two options: either to obtain the government's approval or to try to legislate the law in a way that avoids the financial aspect so that there is no challenge by the government."[/rtl]

[rtl]In a related context, Jamal Koujar, a member of the Finance Committee, explained that Parliament supports the return of the retirement age, but it does not have the authority to approve this amendment from a financial standpoint, as “returning the retirement age entails direct financial obligations, and therefore returning the retirement age is the responsibility of the government, but Parliament has the right to demand it.”[/rtl]
