Saudi Coast Guard shoots an Iranian boat and kills a fisherman

The Saudi coastguard opened fire on an Iranian fishing boat in the Gulf amid growing tension between the rival countries, the official Tasnim news agency reported on Saturday.
"Two Iranian boats during the fishing process in the waters of the Persian Gulf have been washed away by the waves and diverted," the semi-official agency quoted an interior ministry official as saying.
"On this basis and without the support of this matter, the Iranian boats entered the Saudi border, the Saudi Coast Guard fired at the Iranian boats, killing an Iranian fisherman," IRNA quoted Majid Akababaye, director general of border affairs at the Interior Ministry as saying.
"The Saudi action is contrary to humanitarian principles, and even with the assumption that the Iranian vessels entered the Saudi border after the waves of the sea, they were not allowed to open fire on the Iranian boats," he said.
"We are following this issue until it is decided whether the Iranian boats have entered the Saudi border or not."
There was no Saudi reaction. Iranian reports said the incident took place late on Friday.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated to their lowest level in years. Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar last week for reasons including its claim, citing Doha's support for Tehran as a reason.
Iran and Saudi Arabia share accusations of damaging regional security and support warring parties in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.
