    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
International economics expert Nawar Al-Saadi confirmed today, Monday (November 25, 2024), that the results of the population census carry great economic and developmental implications, noting that these indicators represent challenges and opportunities at the same time.
Al-Saadi told Baghdad Today, "The population census revealed that the population has reached more than 45 million people, which increases the demand for basic services such as education, health, and infrastructure, in addition to increasing the consumption of resources and energy," adding that "the population growth rate of 2.3% classifies Iraq among the countries with high growth rates, which puts the government in front of challenges related to providing job opportunities and suitable housing to keep pace with this rapid expansion."
Al-Saadi pointed out that "the population distribution between urban areas (70.3%) and rural areas (29.7%) reflects a continuing trend towards urbanization, which is causing increasing pressure on cities in terms of infrastructure and services." He stressed that "this calls for the development of balanced development plans that aim to reduce the gap between rural and urban areas to limit internal migration."
Regarding the demographic gift, he explained that "the percentage of the population of working age (15-64 years) which reached 60.2% represents a great economic opportunity for Iraq, if invested in through education, training and providing job opportunities, which can turn it into an engine for economic growth." However, he warned that "the presence of a large percentage of the population under working age (36.1%) represents a great social and economic burden, which requires providing them with education and health care."
Regarding the housing crisis, Al-Saadi said, “Iraq currently has 8 million homes, which is not enough to meet the growing demand, especially with the return of displaced persons and the growth in the number of families, which currently stands at about 7.9 million families with an average family size of 5.3 individuals. Therefore, the government must focus on developing sustainable housing policies that meet the needs of different social groups.”
He also pointed out the "percentage of households headed by women (11.33%), considering it an indicator worthy of close monitoring, and requiring the provision of economic and social support to ensure the stability of these households and achieve social justice."
Al-Saadi concluded his statement by saying, “The almost equal distribution between males and females, and the large proportion of the working-age population, give Iraq a strong human base. But to achieve sustainable development, there must be clear national strategies to transform these human resources into a productive force that contributes to strengthening the national economy.”
Earlier today, Monday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced the preliminary results of the general population and housing census in Iraq, which was implemented this month, during his chairing of a joint press conference with the Minister of Planning, the Head of the Statistics and Geographic Information Systems Authority, and the Senior Advisor to the United Nations Population Fund.
