The Ministry of Transport is working to introduce new docks into service at ports, with the aim of expanding container handling operations and increasing storage capacities, as a result of the increase in commercial ship traffic.
The media director of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, affiliated with the ministry, Salam Al-Shahmani, told Al-Sabah: The ports company has begun, in coordination with the Ministry of Transport, to implement infrastructure development projects for its ports, with the aim of introducing new commercial docks into service, with the aim of expanding container handling operations and increasing storage capacity, as a result of the significant increase in commercial traffic through Iraqi ports, which requires increasing docks and raising their storage capacity.
He added that the past months have witnessed an increase in container handling operations to 4 million containers, stressing that the company seeks to ensure that the ports operate according to international specifications for integrated quality systems, noting the continuation of work to develop the external and internal road network of the ports, as well as the removal of sunken marine debris and silt deposits.
