Dollar hits global low for more than a year

The US dollar fell today, touching a year-long global low against a basket of major currencies after the release of the Fed's monetary policy statement after its July meeting.

The Federal Open Market Committee has not announced any changes in monetary policy, which was expected. But policymakers said the US central bank would start cutting its huge holdings of bonds at a "relatively close" time.

That is a change compared to the previous statement by the commission that the Fed would start cutting its holdings of $ 4.5 trillion in bonds this year.

The dollar index lost about 4 percent over the past month and more than 8.5 percent since the beginning of the year.

The euro jumped 0.7 percent against the greenback to $ 1.1739, its highest level since June 15, 2015.

The dollar tumbled to its lowest level in more than two years against its Canadian counterpart, recording 1.2416 Canadian dollars, the lowest level since June 30, 2015.
