Russia calls on Syrian opposition to abandon "impossible demands"
Alexander Lavrentev, head of the Russian delegation to Astana 6, said the process of separating the Syrian opposition and the terrorists was not yet complete. He called on the armed factions to retreat from forming the "national army".
Speaking at a press conference held at the end of the negotiations on the establishment of the Syrian truce in the Kazakh capital, the diplomat expressed the results of the meeting between the Russian delegation and the Syrian opposition delegation.
"We held talks with the Syrian opposition and called on them to show constructive positions and to abandon demands that are impossible to implement," he said.
He added that the Russian side urged opponents during the meeting to retreat from the idea of establishing a "national army", as the purpose of this entity lies not in the fight against terrorism, but in continuing efforts to bring down the government in Damascus.
"We can not turn a blind eye to the attempts of some opposition factions to form united units under the name of the Syrian National Army, and in our opinion, it is unlikely that this would increase the effectiveness of the war on the Da'ash and the Front of Victory, Concerning the overthrow of the internationally recognized legitimate authority in Damascus.
He considered it extremely important to involve the constructive armed opposition in the fight against "Da'ash" and "Front of Victory" as soon as possible.
The unification of all Syrians in the war on terrorism would allow not only positive results in the battlefield but also a basis for confidence-building measures among them. He stressed that there is a long way to establish confidence-building measures between the conflicting parties in Syria.
Lavrintev also pledged that the Russian side will take additional measures to respond to the opposition's request to move the process of releasing the prisoners and handing over the bodies of the dead.
