Turkish Prime Minister Ben Ali Yildirim said that Ankara is considering imposing sanctions against the Kurdistan region of Iraq against the background of the referendum on secession that is taking place today.
Yildirim stressed at a press conference on Monday that his country would not recognize the results of the referendum, which violates the constitution of Iraq and threatens the country with chaos.
The Turkish Prime Minister said that the current crisis reached its peak and reached the point of no return, stressing that his country will not condone any steps aimed at the presence of Turkmen in northern Iraq.
Yildirim said the provincial government was preparing the ground for new clashes in the region and pledged to deal with Baghdad in terms of border management, airlines and other issues.
The Turkish Prime Minister that Ankara received today requests from Iraq and Iran to close the border crossing and a ministerial committee was formed to take the necessary steps in this direction.
Yildirim said that Turkey's steps towards the referendum would include direct coordination with the Baghdad government, adding that Iraqi officers and soldiers would participate in Ankara-run exercises in the border area.
Yildirim accused Iraqi Kurdistan authorities of practicing "something like injustice to change the demographic of the city of Kirkuk," saying that Ankara would coordinate with the Baghdad government against the inclusion of Kirkuk and other non-Iraqi Kurdistan areas in accordance with the country's constitution.
Yildirim expressed readiness of Ankara to help the Baghdad government without hesitation, if requested.
