The Higher Agricultural Committee in Dhi Qar expressed its opposition to reducing its agricultural plan for the winter season for more than 20 percent under the pretext of water scarcity. The agricultural associations warned of exacerbating tribal conflicts in the province and their impact on the agricultural season due to frequent excesses on rivers and streams.
"The High Joint Committee of the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources decided to reduce the agricultural agricultural plan for the current agricultural season by 20 percent, under the pretext of water scarcity," said the first deputy governor of Dhi Qar and head of the Higher Agricultural Committee in the governorate Adel Al-Dakhili.
"The ministerial committee approved an agricultural plan for the province estimated at 360 thousand acres, while the plan proposed by the province includes 448 thousand acres."
Al-Dakhili pointed out that "the area allocated for cultivation of wheat crop within the plan reduced from 291 thousand acres to 263 thousand, while the area of barley decreased from 133 thousand acres to 87 thousand, while reduced the area of vegetable crops from 24 thousand acres to five thousand acres only."
He pointed out that "
He stressed the need to find solutions that allow the implementation of the winter agricultural plan proposed by the province without any prejudice to its proportions and provide the necessary irrigation systems to irrigate the cultivated areas. The Ministry of Water Resources undertakes to cover the water deficit from the reserves that it has achieved and to maintain On the water quota of the province and prevent the transit of other provinces.
The Directorate of Agriculture of Dhi Qar has announced the preparation of an agricultural plan for the winter season, including the cultivation of 448 thousand acres of wheat, barley and vegetables, while confirming the lifting of the plan to the Ministry of Agriculture for approval, indicated that the proposed plan took into account the need of districts and areas of agricultural crops, Agricultural lands and the availability of irrigation water for the crops included in the plan.
The head of the Federation of Agricultural Associations in Dhi Qar Mekdad Shihab al-Yasiri warned of serious repercussions resulting from the reduction of the agricultural plan and water scarcity.
"The reduction of the agricultural plan and the consequent reduction of the share of the province of water would negatively affect the overall economic conditions of the farmers and cause more tribal disputes on land and water," Yasiri said in a statement.
He explained that "most of the farmers in the province are waiting for the winter agricultural season to lazula their agricultural activity by growing wheat and barley, and when the area of land cultivated with these crops is reduced, this means the annual income of farmers fell."
"The scarcity of water, disputes over agricultural land and the proliferation of weapons are among the main causes of tribal disputes in the rural areas of Dhi Qar province," Yasiri said. "More than 20 percent of tribal conflicts are caused by problems around the land, irrigation water, agricultural interests "He stressed that" the scarcity of water in the agricultural season often cause armed tribal conflicts and lead to casualties. "The head of the Federation of agricultural associations that" the scarcity of water has become a chronic problem in the province of Dhi Qar that the province is located at the ends of the rivers, "pointing out that "The existence of scarcity may push some farmers to overtake Li own peers leads to a conflict over water and the fall of the victims not only between the conflicting parties, but between the innocent people of the clan members share the water. "
"The farmers are still suffering from the problem of scarcity and fluctuation of water levels, which are exacerbated with the limited use of modern systems in watering agricultural crops."
He stressed the need to adopt sound mechanisms to improve the agricultural sector and reconsider the agricultural policy adopted and support farmers in the provision of modern irrigation systems and the provision of fertilizers and seeds and agricultural supplies and machinery at subsidized prices.
