An Israeli army official announced that a warship was equipped with an anti-missile "Iron Dome" anti-missile battery for the first time in the sea.
General Zvika Haimovitch, of the Israeli Air Force, said that the system installed on the "Lahav" cruiser was tested successfully and will be a valuable factor to ensure the security of the gas fields off the Israeli coast.
"Today, the air force has added a new layer to defend and protect Israeli energy sources in the Mediterranean," he told reporters. "This is an important step."
Israel is developing gas production from the Tamar and Liviatan fields, which were discovered in 2009 and 2010, and the Tamar field began to be exploited in 2013 with a total capacity of 238 billion cubic meters, one of the most promising gas fields discovered in recent years .
The field of "Liviatan" is scheduled to start in 2019 when the reserve of the Tamar field begins to decline. The Tamar field is 130 kilometers from Haifa.
