The New Yorker reported that the Washington administration is moving to accept Bashar al-Asad as president of Syria until the upcoming presidential election in 2021.
"This trend reflects the military reality on the ground and the successes of Syria's allies, Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, in strengthening the position of the Syrian regime," the magazine quoted US and European officials as saying.
According to the magazine, Washington, which has spent more than $ 14 billion on its campaign in Syria since 2014, is forced by the reality on the ground to accept the survival of Assad in power for at least four more years.
