BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki flew to Washington yesterday, seeking urgent military supplies to fight an upsurge in sectarian violence spilling over the Syrian border.

He also will offer himself to President Barack Obama as a mediator with Iran and Bashar Assad, Tehran’s ally in Syria, Iraqi sources said. But U.S. officials played down that prospect.

Two years after his last visit, as U.S. troops were leaving Iraq, his country is suffering bombings on a scale not seen since the bloody sectarian chaos of 2006-08. Seeking a third term next year, al-Maliki also seems to be looking to help entrench his position.

Speaking at Baghdad airport before flying out for three days of talks in Washington, which will culminate at the White House on Friday, al-Maliki said it was urgent that Iraq get “offensive weapons to combat terrorism and hunt armed groups.”

He stressed a need for helicopters, and aides have said drones are useful to patrol the border with Syria. The Shiite-led government in Iraq says al-Qaida and other Sunni groups fighting Syria’s Assad bring in men and arms and have killed 7,000 Iraqis this year.

“We will discuss security and intelligence in addition to arms needed by the military to fight terrorism,” said al-Maliki, who will meet with Vice President Joe Biden today and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Thursday.

Al-Maliki’s government says al-Qaida is bent on securing territory — Sunnis are the main community in the desert next to Syria — and wants to destabilize Iraq to help oust Assad. But many Iraqi Sunnis accuse al-Maliki of using violence to justify marginalizing them.

Al-Maliki made no mention yesterday of his potential as a go-between for the U.S. and Iran, but several Iraqis said he would discuss that issue in Washington.

With the Middle East increasingly divided between a Sunni bloc led by Saudi Arabia and Shiites looking to non-Arab Iran, al-Maliki could play a central role.

He is a Shiite Arab leader of a large, central state, and he lived in exile in Iran and Syria. Plus, he has ties in the U.S.
