Trump: America wants immigrants from everywhere
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump has said he wants to receive immigrants "from everywhere" after last week's insulting remarks by immigrants at a White House meeting.
"We want to come from everywhere," Trump said in response to a question on his migration policy during his meeting with the Oval Office with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
On Tuesday, the controversy sparked by Trump's remarks in Washington continued, especially as Republicans and Democrats tried to reach an understanding in Congress on the settlement of hundreds of thousands of immigrants who arrived in the United States after their temporary residency was revoked in September by Barack Obama.
Trump did not deny in a clear way that he used the term "scum states" when referring specifically to Haiti and African countries, but stressed that his remarks were distorted.
On Tuesday morning, in a series of tweets, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who attended the White House meeting, attacked and confirmed that the president used the offensive phrase "repeatedly".
"Senator Dick Durbin completely distorted what was said. It is impossible to reach an agreement when there is no confidence. "
"We need a credible immigration system that we need now."
