Israeli police have arrested a number of officials of the Israeli telephone company Bezeq on the investigation into corruption cases surrounding a close associate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israeli police said they "arrested a number of high-ranking officials in the Israeli telephone company" Bezeq "under case 4000, in less than a week on the recommendation of the police accusing Netanyahu in two separate cases of corruption.
"The investigative body opened a new file, which was referred to the Lahav 433 security unit in the light of the evidence collected by the Israel Securities Commission in the framework of the Bezek file.
The investigation is suspected of covering Shaul Wufic, owner of the Walla news site and most of Bezeq's shares, in Netanyahu's election campaign at the site, in return for Bezeq's communications facilities.
The investigation also accuses the director-general of the Israeli Ministry of Communications, Shlomo Filber, appointed by the prime minister, of allowing Bezeq to buy shares in YES.
Netanyahu was not named in the memo as an accused in the case, but according to Israeli radio, he could be investigated.
"This is another false allegation," the prime minister's office said. "The prime minister will not work for the benefit of Elovitch and Bezek, or in exchange for covering his campaign and anything."
The Haaretz newspaper reported that "the site's executive director, Ilan Yashua, is a witness in the case, and stressed that he faced tremendous pressure to hide the negative reports from Netanyahu and his wife Sara, and to publish only the positive ones."
Last Tuesday, police recommended indicting Netanyahu on charges of bribery, fraud and dishonesty in corruption files known as Case 1000 and Case 2000.
In his first public appearance, Israeli Attorney-General Avihai Mandelblit praised police investigators and the quality of their work during the one-year investigation, denying reports of a dispute between the prosecution and the police.
"The investigations were conducted in a professional, intelligent and intelligent manner, with determination to prove the truth," he said at a conference at Tel Aviv University. "No one is above the law and no one is immune to it."
