Al-Shammari said in a press statement that "the Kurdish deputies who participated in the referendum on the secession of Kurdistan on September 25, and promoted and supported the referendum, raised their names to the Iraqi judiciary for trial as they violated the constitutional right."

Al-Shammari claimed that "the Iraqi judiciary has not yet issued a final judgment on the cases brought against them, and therefore the Electoral Commission is not entitled to exclude them from running in the upcoming parliamentary elections."

"If they are convicted of a crime against honor or a misdemeanor," he said, "the judiciary has not yet issued anything against them. They are entitled to participate even if the case has been investigated."

The differences between Baghdad and Kurdistan escalated in September 2017, after the latter held a referendum for its citizens on their position on the separation of the region from Iraq and the establishment of an independent Kurdish state.
