Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave an order to the army in 2011 to prepare to attack Iran within 15 days, a former director of the Israeli Mossad said Thursday.
Tamir Bardot, who headed the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad during the period from 2011 to 2016, told the program "Aovda" broadcast by the Kishit TV station that it was not issued "as a training", according to excerpts from the interview.
"When he tells you to start the countdown, you realize he does not play tricks with you," Pardo told the Associated Press. "These things are of great importance."
Pardo explained that once he received it he sought "clarifications about everything he could explain, review the matter with legal advisers, and consult anyone who could consult him to see who has the mandate to issue the order to launch a war."
According to the excerpts of the dialogue, Bardot said he wanted to "be certain that if something went wrong, and if the job failed, it would not be in the position of the person who made the decision regarding an illegal operation."
It was not clear what happened after the order issued by Netanyahu, but Israel never carried out any raid on Iran in 2011, while there was no immediate comment from Netanyahu's office.
Pardo's allegation comes as Israel and Iran are waging a proxy war in Syria, briefly warning of a full-scale confrontation this month after Israel bombed sites in Syria, killing Iranian fighters after a rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
In February, Israel dropped what it said was an unmanned Iranian drone entering Israeli airspace. Israel responded by attacking anti-aircraft sites in Syria and an Israeli warplane was shot down during the battle.
Israel has repeatedly warned that it sees Iranian influence in Syria as a threat, referring to the Iranian military presence inside Syria, as well as Iranian support for armed groups.
