North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump shook hands and exchanged smiles at the start of their historic summit on Sentosa Island in Singapore, which lasted 41 minutes Tuesday.
"I was honored to meet you, President," Kim said moments later, sitting beside Trump.
With international press cameras on them, Trump and Kim built an atmosphere of initial friendship.According to Reuters.
"I have a really great feeling, we will have a great debate and we will be very successful, it's an honor for me and we're going to have a great friendship, I have no doubt about it," Trump said.
"It was not easy to get here ... there were obstacles but we overcame them to be here," Kim replied.
Trump and Kim held a meeting alone for 41 minutes, before being joined by other officials.
If they succeed in achieving a diplomatic breakthrough, this could change the security landscape in Northeast Asia in the same way that the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 caused a change in Europe.
Trump had first arrived at the Kabila Hotel on Sentosa Island.
In the hours leading up to the summit, Trump expressed optimism about the chances of the first ever meeting between two leaders in power for the two countries, while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with some caution about whether Kim would prove his intentions to nuclear disarmament.
Officials from both sides have held a final round of talks aimed at setting a framework for a summit that was not until a few months ago at all after the two leaders exchanged insults and threats and heightened fears of war.
Pompeo told reporters that the summit may provide "an unprecedented opportunity to change the course of our relations and achieve peace and prosperity" in North Korea.
But he played down the possibility of rapid progress and said the summit should set a framework for "the hard work it would entail," stressing that North Korea must move towards complete, final and verifiable nuclear disarmament.
But North Korea has yet to show a clear desire to give up its nuclear weapons, which it considers necessary for the survival of the country's ruling regime.
Bombeo said the sanctions against North Korea would remain in force until such time. "If diplomacy does not move in the right direction ... these measures will be increased," he said.
"North Korea confirmed earlier its willingness to disarm nuclear weapons, and we are keen to make sure this is true," he said.
The White House later said discussions with North Korea had progressed "faster than expected". He said Trump would leave Singapore on Tuesday evening after the summit after he was due to leave on Wednesday.
A source familiar with the details of Kim's visit on Sunday said the North Korean leader would leave Singapore on Tuesday afternoon[/ltr]
