The United States has confirmed its intention to press ahead with Iran's accountability for its violations of UN Security Council resolutions and support for terrorism, calling on other council members to impose sanctions.

In a statement, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nicky Hailey confirmed that Iran's continued violation of UN Security Council resolutions through arms transfers throughout the Middle East, violation of travel bans on its officials, support for terrorist organizations and destabilization of the region.

Tehran supports the Huthis, Hezbollah, Hamas and the Assad regime rather than meeting the needs of its people, she said.

She noted that the United States will not allow violations of Iran to pass without monitoring, calling on the rest of the members of the Security Council to do the same.

Heili's position coincided with a session of the Security Council on the implementation of resolution 2231, which approved the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group of Six.

"In the face of a country that is constantly violating the decisions of this council, we have to decide on the consequences," US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Jonathan Cohen said at the meeting.

The US diplomat called on members of the council to impose sanctions on Iran in response to its "malignant behavior" in the Middle East.

He added that Iran is supplying the Houthis in Yemen with missiles, in violation of the international arms embargo.

This is the first meeting of the Security Council since President Donald Trump announced in May the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement, which means re-imposing sanctions on Tehran.

A senior US State Department official on Tuesday called on countries buying oil from Iran to stop by November, when Washington's sanctions against Tehran would begin.
