ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi President Fuad Masum on Saturday held several meetings with Iraqi leaders to discuss the formation of the new government and the date to hold the Parliament’s first session.

Masum met with current Iraqi Prime Minister and leader of al-Nasr Coalition Haider al-Abadi to discuss the political developments, security and economic situation, and the formation of the largest parliamentary bloc.

“The meeting [between Masum and Abadi] mainly focused on the developments related to escalating efforts to form the largest bloc ahead of the call for the Council of Representatives to hold its first session within the constitutional timeline,” a statement from the Presidency website said.

During the meeting, Masum stressed the need for all political parties to respect the timeline for holding the Parliament’s first session, it added.

“The meeting also emphasized the necessity to enhance efforts to protect and deepen the democratic process by abiding by the constitution and respecting it,” the statement concluded.

Masum also met with Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of the State of Law Coalition, and one of the Vice-Presidents, Ammar al-Hakim, leader of al-Hikma Front, Hadi al-Amiri, Head of al-Fatih Coalition, and Chairman of the Hashd al-Shaabi Committee Falih al-Fayyad.

According to the statements released on the Presidency website, the meetings focused on holding the Parliament’s first session within the constitutional timeline, the importance of abiding by the constitution and respecting the voters’ will for reform, and developing state institutions.

Regarding the same matters, Masum met with a joint delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

During the meeting, Masum and the Kurdish delegation discussed the political developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as well as ways to enhance cooperation and collaboration between all political parties.

No coalition has been able to announce the largest parliamentary bloc to form the new Iraqi government yet.

Moreover, two joint Iraqi coalitions are competing to gain Kurds’ support for the formation of the next government.

On one hand, Muqtada al-Sadr, Head of Sairoon, and Abadi’s al-Nasr Coalition, and on the other side, Maliki’s State of Law Coalition and Amiri’s al-Fatih.
