    Baghdad / Al-Ghad Press:

British Ambassador to Baghdad John Wilkes on Monday presented five priorities to the new Iraqi government.
"The British Embassy in Baghdad and the British Consulate General in Erbil have in recent months listened to Iraqis, both the general public and the elite, about what they want from their next governments in Baghdad and Erbil," the ambassador said in a statement.

"The message was consistent all the time about a government that provides jobs, services and infrastructure, dealing with corruption, respecting human dignity and rights, and ensuring security and respect for the law," he said.

"We have seriously thought about how the United Kingdom can help Iraq achieve these goals. We have come up with five priorities that we believe we can work quickly with the next governments in Baghdad and Erbil to do that," he said.

"The priority is to challenge ethnic sectarianism and to bring Iraqis together on the basis of common identity, interests and human needs, security sector reform, so that the security forces protect people and defend them, reform the Iraqi economy and the financial sector, so that there are fewer opportunities for corruption and opportunities to create wealth," he said. "Reform subsidies and assistance so that support focuses on the most vulnerable and needs and creates a better environment for business in the private sector."

"We congratulated President Barham Salih and Prime Minister-designate Adel Abdul Mahdi on assuming their new responsibilities and discussed all these issues with them," he said. "We are confident that through them we can build a partnership that will bring positive, swift and tangible benefits to everyone in Iraq, .
