The Saudi royal family on Friday began to intervene in tackling the crisis caused by the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The sources said King Salman was not sufficiently aware of the crisis because Crown Prince aides were keen to limit King's follow-up to developments through Saudi media only.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was forced to brief King Salman on Khashoggi's case and sought to intervene as it turned into a global crisis, the sources said.
The sources added that King Salman felt compelled to intervene to reduce the consequences of the death of Jamal Khashoggi and that he began reviewing the powers of his son Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
