WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US military action against Iran could be possible if US sanctions against the country fail to curb Tehran from delivering weapons to hostile groups in the region, the US administration said.
"We have been very clear with the Iranian regime that we will not hesitate to use military force when our interests are threatened," said State Department Special Representative Brian Hawk. "I think they understand that. I think they understand that very clearly."
Military action against Iran could be possible if US sanctions against the country fail to stop Tehran from delivering weapons to hostile groups in the region
Speaking at a press conference at the joint Anacostia Bowling Center in Washington, DC, Hawk was asked about the possible next steps the administration could take against Iran in a "pressure campaign" against the country. "I think that right now, while we have a military option on the state, We prefer to use all the tools at our disposal diplomatically. "
Hawk spoke on the occasion of a show of Iranian military weapons and equipment - many of which were handed over to the United States by Saudi Arabia - after they were obtained from pro-Tehran armed groups in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan.
The United States focused on the issue of Yemen with regard to the accusations, reiterating that Iran continues to provide supplies to the Houthi group in the bloody civil war, which entered its fourth year against the Saudi-led military alliance.
"The world should not doubt that this is a priority for the United States," said Katie Wellbarger, deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security.
The Pentagon pointed to what Iran's companies have said about weapons shrapnel as a way to prove that weapons came from Iran, and there was no immediate way to independently verify where weapons were made or used.
Hawk also denied that the timing of the incident was an attempt to change the narratives away from Saudi Arabia, which was subjected to extensive scrutiny of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the increase in civilian deaths in Yemen
Hawk dismissed criticism that the show - the second in a year - was a political act by the Trump administration, which could increase tension in the region. "Simply put, Iran's missiles, small arms and drones are visible in broad daylight," he said. That nations see with their own eyes that this is a serious and growing threat.
The outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations, Nicky Healy, held a similar event at the same site in November.
Hawk also denied that the timing of the event was an attempt to change the narratives away from Saudi Arabia, which has been heavily scrutinized over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the increase in civilian deaths in Yemen.
On Wednesday, the Senate passed a resolution ending US military support for the Saudi-led campaign in the civil war in Yemen in a sharp rebuke to President Trump, who failed to condemn the country for Khashoggi's death in October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
"There's nothing to do with what's going on in Saudi Arabia," Hawk said. "But of course it's about the many missiles that have been intercepted by Saudi Arabia, which show how much of a threat it is.
Defense officials echoed similar statements, including that abandoning Yemen now would severely harm national security interests of the United States and the interests of Middle Eastern partners.
