US President Donald Trump announced a national emergency to protect US computer networks from cyber attacks from "foreign enemies".
The US president signed an executive order banning American companies from using foreign networks, citing the threat to the security of the country.
Trump did not specify the names of certain companies in the decision he issued, but analysts say he is mainly targeting the Chinese telecom giant Huawei. Several countries have spoken of concerns that China will use Huawei's spy products.
The Chinese company, the world's largest manufacturer of communications equipment, has denied any espionage or sabotage activities through its overseas business.
The Trump order aims to "protect America from foreign enemies seeking to create security or exploitation gaps in the infrastructure of ICT services," a White House statement said.
"This decision gives the commerce minister the authority to ban transactions that pose an unacceptable risk to national security," the statement said.
Observers believe that Trump's decision mainly targets Huawei of China after the failure of trade negotiations with the Beijing government
The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Bay, welcomed the move by the US president as soon as it was released and said in a statement that it was "an important step towards securing America's networks."
The United States has already banned federal agencies from using Huawei products, encouraged allies not to use them, and Australia and New Zealand banned the use of Huawei equipment in the fifth generation communications network.
Huawei's chairman, Liang Hua, confirmed the company's willingness to "sign non-spying agreements with governments" at a meeting in London on Tuesday, as concerns over the security of its fifth-generation NGN products continued.
Trump's recent move is likely to fuel relations with China, already under US pressure, after Washington and Beijing enter into a trade war.
