According to Lebanese media reports that the escorts of the Minister of Education, Akram Chehayb, fired at demonstrators against the government's decision to impose new taxes, and run over one of them, in the capital Beirut.
The official Lebanese news agency, on Thursday evening, that "the facilities of one of the characters fired at the demonstrators, and run over one of them in front of the junction of the center, amid the anger of the protesters."
According to local media, including the newspaper "An-Nahar", that "during the convoy of Education Minister Akram Chehayb, from the House of Representatives, the protesters tried to block the road in front of him, but one of the escorts of the convoy fired in the air, causing a state of pandemonium in the vicinity of the Council MPs. "
The newspaper added that the incident "sparked great anger among the demonstrators and social networking activists."
Commenting on the incident, Progressive Socialist Party Chairman Walid Jumblatt asked the education minister to "hand over those who fired in the air."
Jumblatt added, in a tweet, according to the newspaper, "We are under the law, but we ask for a transparent investigation, and refuse to attack anyone."
Popular demonstrations in Lebanon, which some have called the “WhatsApp Uprising”, were denounced by the government and a protest against the new taxes to reflect the depth of the internal crisis and the living conditions.
