    London: Middle East Online
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Some 731 banks and 140 government offices were set on fire during the current unrest in Iran, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said on Wednesday. He said in a statement to the official Iranian news agency, that more than 50 bases used by security forces were attacked and about 70 gas stations burned. He gave no details on the locations of the attacks.

The agency quoted the minister as saying that up to 200 thousand took part in the protests, which began on November 15 (nationwide) after the announcement of the increase in gasoline prices.

Amnesty International said on Monday it had documented the deaths of at least 143 people during the protests, the worst anti-government tensions in Iran since authorities put down the Green Revolution protests against election fraud in 2009.

Iran denied the number of Amnesty International figures, saying several people, including members of the security forces, had been killed and more than 1,000 arrested. The New York-based Human Rights Center said the number of detainees could be close to 4,000.

The Iranian authorities have not provided any official overall figures on the number of people killed, injured or even arrested during several days of protests in some 100 Iranian cities and towns.

Protests over the price of hydrocarbons in the country's major cities have been marred by street protests.

Iran's economy is shrinking sharply as a result of the U.S. withdrawal in 2018 from the international agreement on Iran's nuclear program signed in 2015 and the reimposition of tough US sanctions on Tehran.
