The Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Friday expressed regret that the Iranian Consulate General in Basra was attacked by protesters and set fire to it.
"At a time when we understand the demands of the demonstrators from our people in the province of Basra, we express deep regret to the Iranian consulate in Basra being attacked by some of the demonstrators," ministry spokesman Ahmad Mahjoub said in a statement.
The burning of the consulate "is an unsatisfactory development that is incompatible with the duty of national hospitality for missions."
He also said that "targeting diplomatic missions is unacceptable and harms Iraq's interests and relations with the countries of the world and does not relate to slogans of protest, nor demands for services and water," calling on demonstrators to avoid harming them.
He called on the federal and local government to strengthen the protection of the security of diplomatic missions in Basra.
Dozens of people demonstrated on Friday afternoon outside the Iranian consulate in the southernmost province of Basra, demanding Tehran stop interfering in Iraq.
The protesters also called on Iran to withdraw the parties loyal to the province, which accused them of managing financial and administrative corruption in the state institutions and services.
Iraqi security sources said the protesters stormed the consulate building in the Abe al-Khasib area and set fire to it, chanting slogans against Iran.
Other protesters set fire to the building of the Directorate of Municipalities of Basra and the office of the semi-official Iraqi channel again, according to eyewitnesses.
Witnesses also said the al-Amin estate in Basra was also burned in a clear sign of street discontent over the Shiite religious establishment.
The provinces of Basra are witnessing continuous demonstrations since the beginning of last July to protest the deterioration of the reality of the service, has escalated recently after the contamination of drinking water, and high salinity, causing thousands of intestinal diseases, and severe severe.
Hundreds of angry protesters set on fire on Thursday evening at government offices and offices of parties and Shiite factions close to Iran, led by Badr Organization led by Hadi al-Amiri and Asaib Ahl al-Haq led by Qais al-Khazali.
This was the latest escalation in the violence that has accompanied the ongoing popular protests in central and southern provinces since last July, which calls for improved public services, job creation and fighting corruption.
Security authorities imposed a curfew in Basra to contain the violence.
Since the start of protests in Basra on July 9, the total number of dead has reached 26, according to figures from the High Commission for Human Rights.
