BAGHDAD - Mawazine News
After the blue hats owners attacked the demonstrators this week, the attention of some activists turned to the last hope they left with a desire for support and support, which is Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani.
"Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is the only strong person who can help us," said one of the protesters, Mahdi Abdel-Zahra, 30, as he watched security forces behind concrete barriers in Baghdad.
"He should call ... for a million rally against the government. This is one last chance."
There are many, like Abdul-Zahra, who have high hopes for Sistani. He had the last say and the decisive word that forced resigning Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi to step down amid popular unrest in November. With one fatwa from him in 2014, the country's largest Shiite cleric mobilized tens of thousands of fighters to fight ISIS.
But as the demonstrations diminished after the followers of Muqtada al-Sadr turned on them, a section of Iraqi youth began a discussion about the importance of what Sistani is saying and whether they would benefit from it if he interfered with his weight in the matter.
"I made countless speeches on Fridays on this issue, but unfortunately nothing happened, as if no one was hearing," said Ali Abboud, an activist in the holy city of Najaf, Sistani's headquarters.
"When a fatwa was issued to fight extremists, I was greeted (with hearing) and obedience. But there is no clear fatwa here, there is virtually nothing forcing those who hold power to act."
Sistani rarely comments on politics. But he spoke in almost every Friday sermon about the popular uprising in Iraq, which sparked off among masses of the Shiite majority in the country in Baghdad and the south in October.
The 89-year-old cleric was distancing himself from politics under Saddam Hussein, who was suppressing the Shiite majority. But after Saddam Hussein was toppled in the US invasion in 2003, Sistani emerged as one of the most powerful figures in Iraq.
Words of weight and
Sistani's words have a lot of weight among millions, whether among protesters or the political establishment.
Sistani, who was born in Iran, distanced himself from Tehran and did not agree with the Islamic Republic's model of government.
He urged early elections and political reform and condemned the killing of about 500 peaceful protesters by security forces and armed factions backed by Iran.
Anti-government protesters now want him to make Sadr, who belongs to a religious family from Najaf, bound his borders.
Sadr, an opponent of foreign influence and anti-corruption but characterized by political opportunism, asked his followers to abandon anti-government protests and remove sit-ins last week after reaching an agreement with the parties allied with Iran to appoint Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi as the new prime minister.
On Wednesday, his followers burned tents in Najaf and stormed a camp, killing at least eight people. On Thursday they stormed a camp in Karbala and wounded at least 10 people.
"The followers of Muqtada were protecting us from the armed factions. Now they are stealing our revolution," Abdul-Zahra said.
Diaa al-Asadi, a top aide to Sadr, said the cleric did not intend to instruct his followers to attack the protesters. Sadr urged his followers on Twitter to remove sit-ins that were disrupting the regime, but he demanded that they continue to support peaceful protests.
We will not wait
Activists feel sorry when they see how the movements of Sadr, one of the last personalities whose supporters have been providing support and assistance in the political establishment, have reduced their numbers.
In some streets and squares in Baghdad, where clashes have intensified in recent months between security forces and protesters, market stalls have returned to business by selling household goods, toys and sneakers.
In southern Najaf, tents burned to the main sit-in site. The students chanted slogans against Allawi in a square in the nearby city of Karbala, where Sistani is delivering Friday sermons, but in small numbers.
The protesters say that Sistani should issue a strong statement, denouncing Allawi, who reject him, and al-Sadr because of his agreement with the parties allied with Iran.
But they know that the cleric is often cautious and prepare to move forward without his blessing.
"Sistani is the only leader who is part of the system and supports our cause - we welcome that," said Hussein Sadri, an activist in Karbala.
"But we will not just stand by waiting for what he says to guide us and act accordingly. We will act. The uprising erupted among young people who got to know the world through the Internet and not from religious men."
The majority of the older generation in Iraq disagrees with this approach, and they say the Shiites will follow Al-Sistani's instructions literally. End 29 / A 43
