Yesterday, Sunday, a member of the Parliamentary Services and Reconstruction Committee, MP Jasim Al-Bakhati, ruled out the existence of financial allocations for the construction of the large port of Al-Faw within the current year’s budget, while noting that the reason is due to political interference.
Al-Bakhati said in a press statement that "there is pressure exerted on the Minister of Transport and the government to disavow the agreement signed with a Korean company to build the large Faw port, for special and narrow reasons."
He explained, "These interventions seek not to adopt this vital project by the Koreans, through accusations that are far from the truth," stressing that "the Korean company has very great capabilities through its supervision of the implementation of many ports, including the construction of the port of Qatar."
Al-Bakhati expressed his "surprise at the coldness of the government and the Ministry of Transport in following up on the implementation of this project, despite its great importance to Iraq," indicating that "there are pressures being exerted against the Minister of Transport, to dissolve the issue of building the large Faw port and delay it to the next government."
A member of the Parliamentary Services Committee ruled out that "there will be financial allocations in the current year’s budget to build this important and strategic port for Iraq and the region due to political interference."
He pointed out that "the minister's silence indicates an intention to cross this stage until next October, until the tasks of the government and parliament come to an end."
The Minister of Transport, Nasser Al-Shibli, announced, at an earlier time, the agreement with the Korean company Daewoo to establish the port of Faw, to begin implementing it in the next few days, despite the recent calls made by political parties to replace it with Chinese companies.
