The Prime Minister’s Adviser for Financial Affairs, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, stressed, on Sunday, that housing policies in Iraq should be affordable, indicating that there is a deficit of 2.5 housing units in Iraq.
Saleh said in a press interview, "The housing policies in a developing country such as Iraq should be financing at low costs, that is, easy financing with a grant element that does not mean that it is not recovered, but rather long-term financing with little interest is called the grant element."
He added that "the real estate bank and the housing fund are the basis for housing policies because it is their development loans, which are developmental and facilitated in general, with very simple interest, closer to administrative downloads and long repayment periods," indicating that "the state is moving towards strengthening this type of housing loans."
Saleh pointed out that "the real estate bank and the housing fund have been supported by the Central Bank of Iraq within the housing initiative in amounts close to 3 trillion dinars during the past four or five years, and has achieved great success in the housing sector movement," adding at the same time that "there is an accumulated need for units." Housing units, which it is said that the deficit is estimated at 2.5 million housing units, which is a large number.
He pointed out that "commercial banks do not practice housing policies except rarely, and the benefits of financing them commercially, as such loans are treated on the basis of a commercial loan and not a development loan."
Iraq suffers from a stifling housing crisis due to the increasing population of Iraq and the limited housing complexes in addition to the citizen’s inability to build his own housing unit due to the high cost of land and construction materials.
